The “Mercato delle Vettovaglie”, often called the Mercato Centrale, is truly a centrepiece of the city and well worth a visit if you’re making the trip to Livorno. It’s housed in a striking, large historical building from the late 19th century, impressive even before you step inside.
Inside, you’ll find that vibrant fish section, fruit and vegetables, local cheeses, cured meats (salumi), fresh bread, pastries, meat, poultry, and various other local products. The atmosphere is bustling, noisy, and wonderfully authentic – it’s a fantastic place to simply wander and see the local produce firsthand.
The building itself is quite grand and worth appreciating. It’s definitely recommended for a morning visit (as activity slows significantly in the afternoon) to capture the true energy of Livorno’s daily life.
