As you travel between Marina di Pisa and the city of Pisa itself, you’ll notice a rather distinct church by the roadside: the Basilica di San Piero a Grado. We recommend a stop. It’s not a vast, sprawling complex, so it doesn’t demand hours of your time.
The Basilica is an example of Romanesque architecture, with its origins stretching back to the 10th and 11th centuries. Its location is deeply significant; tradition holds that this is the very spot where Saint Peter first landed in Italy en route to Rome. Step inside, and you are greeted by a wonderfully atmospheric nave.
